Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

We wanted to get out of the house and do something fun today and after searching online we found this place. They are doing a lights display until Monday and I thought the girls would really enjoy it. It was pretty cold and a lot of the displays were outside but they seemed to enjoy it. We had them all bundled up and I had brought them "feetie" pajamas. We found a bathroom and changed them into those to keep them warmer and we had their boots, gloves, hats, and extra blankets to tuck around them in the stroller.

Gracie standing in an "igloo" covered in lights.

You can't really see the lights in these pictures. It was a lot darker when we left and it looked better. We saw a lot of things early before the lights were so brilliant but we missed the crowds and it was good to see some of the stuff before it was dark. They also had dollhouse and train displays that were indoor. There's a beautiful greenhouse that was fun to walk through and it was nice and warm. This place does different things throughout the year so we'll have to check it out again in the spring. They have a children's garden with a treehouse and other activities I think the girls would like. We got to go in the treehouse this time and Gracie wanted to stay in it but I was too cold and wanted to move on. She must have enjoyed it though because she kept making comments and asking to see things again.

Don't worry, we did lift Gracie up too so that she could see the trains better!

One dollhouse had a dog sitting on the toilet and the one we're looking at in the picture had a little girl sitting on the toilet. I pointed this out to Gracie and she said, "Yah, she's a good girl!"
We're trying everything we can to get her potty trained and she's been "going" on the potty an average of two to three times a day. We just take her in every hour and hope something happens. She's so proud when she does go and we praise her like crazy. She still doesn't ever volunteer to go though unless she's gone in her pull-up and wants it off. Another problem is that for some reason she wants a new one every time, even though it's the same design, and I think she's figured out that she only gets a new one if the one she's wearing is wet. Everybody gets potty trained eventually so I guess I'll just have to be patient. We are just desperate to not have three in diapers. We'll cross our fingers!

  1. It looks so cold! Good luck with the potty training. I cannot imagine having three in diapers. Mayumi probably should be potty training right now, but I am too lazy to fight with her about it.

  2. She will get it soon! Every kid is different, just don't give up! I miss my girls, but it looks like they are having a good time!

  3. Potty training is my toughest hurdle as a mom. That is just the nature of the beast:) My kids (who I happen to think are extremely intelligent:) weren't trained till 3 or 3 1/2 years old, so in my experience, gracie is still young (not to say that she can't do it, but that she's not a late trainer yet.) Bottom line: you can lead a kid to the potty, but you can't make her "go." We've tried incentives of all kinds (stamps or stickers on a chart to earn a toy, candy, etc.) (never threats or punishments) and there just was no guaranteed technique. I even paid $25 for an e-book called potty-training in 3 days and tried it. It had some good elements (increase fluids big time, keep a constant close eye on the child, sit them on the training potty when you notice they start to go, etc.) but even that all didn't work as planned (it took much more than 3 days!)
Candi is 2 now and I am starting to have her follow everyone into the bathroom, flush and clap for them, etc. She sits on the potty right before a bath (just for fun training) but I'm not going to start "Training" her until we get back from our trip. Even then, I think I am learning that it has to be on her own time. Just a thought for Gracie: Maybe you could try real underwear or nothing at all. Pull-ups have never worked with my kids (during the day).
Good luck, and remember, "This too shall pass!"
